Underwater Archaeology, the Sunken Treasures

© Pierre-Arnaud

Founded by the Greeks on a site of volcanic rock, Agde was built 26 centuries ago around a maritime world whose remains are preserved and reappear regularly in the charming museum Ephebe. Built to house collections of underwater archaeology, this museum includes the finest collection of ancient bronze artefacts found on site.
In people's mind, the wrecks have continued to fuel the myth of the sunken treasure by successive discoveries over a period of 60 years: Wing of Victory and an Etruscan tripod found in the 80's, two bronze statues from the Roman era, an Eros and a royal child found in 2001, a head of Hermes found in 2004 in Sète, and a beautiful oinochoe discovered in 2011.
