The Béziers area

A southern French town situated between the wine producing area on the plains and the Mediterranean, Béziers is crossed by the river Orb and the Canal du Midi.

During your stay in Béziers, you'll discover an attractive southern town with a proud past, famous for its wine, feria and rugby!
The peaceful setting of the Canal du Midi makes it perfect for exploring on foot, by bicycle or by barge.
From the fine sandy beaches to the vineyards stretching out onto the horizon, the area is ideal for your holiday at the seaside or in the countryside.

The Canal du Midi: discover culture and nature at the water's edge

Designed during the reign of King Louis XIV and listed as World Heritage of Humanity, the Canal du Midi can be explored at any time of year:

  • By bicycle or on foot, along its towpath
  • By barge or houseboat

Pierre Paul Riquet, its ingenious designer, produced a number of remarkable technical innovations including the 9 locks at Fonséranes.  Don't miss them!
As you continue along the canal, stop off at the attractive port of Colombiers and at the Maison du Malpas for further information.
Nearby, the Oppidum d'Ensérune and its archaeological museum bring you a slice of Gallo-Roman history.

Béziers: a town with a proud winemaking past

The history of the town and its surroundings is closely linked to that of the vineyards, and just like their products it is well worth sampling!

  • France's first co-operative winery In Maraussan, which was opened in 1905
  • Rambling in the vineyards
  • A discovery tour of the "châteaux pinardiers" (wine producers' mansions) built in the early 19th century by wealthy winegrowers. Enjoy a wine tasting session while you're here (with moderation of course!).
