Astonishing natural architecture

Amidst a landscape of 'garrigues' (Mediterranean scrubland) between the Cévennes and Montpellier, Pic St-Loup stands like a steep-sided giant sculpture. The two sides of its shark's fin shaped form are quite different. The north face looks towards Hortus mountain, and is more
like a sheer cliff, from whence the name Pic,
while the other side has a gentler aspect
and looks towards the wine-growing plains
and the Mediterranean sea.

An amazing view

To the west, you'll have uninterrupted views of the village of Saint-Martin-de-Londres. To the east, in the far distance, you can make out the ruins of Montferrand castle. And if you're feeling energetic, you can walk along the ridge from one end to the other!

This spectacle of nature can be seen from a long way off - from the Promenade du Peyrou esplanade in Montpellier and even from the seafront. Jean Balladur, the architect who created La Grande Motte, modelled his Grande Pyramide buildings on it.

A great place for leisure activities

On the south face, a number of marked hiking trails take you to the summit in a couple of hours, sometimes through holm oak undergrowth and at other times in across smooth limestone and scree.

At the summit, amongst the greenery, you'll find Saint Joseph's chapel.
